British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
