🔗 Share this article From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed. Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light. Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the censorship process. Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater openness. “People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added. A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release However, a segment of conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration. The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out. Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the attack. “It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer. “New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.” Clinton Campaign Releases Statement Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement. “The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added. Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill requiring the files' publication. The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of files that included no previously unseen data.
